About Sardinia

Sardinia is large enough to hold several distinct kitesurfing destinations, and the wind arrives from enough directions that the spot of the day changes with the forecast. The Mistral comes down from the north-west, the Tramontana from the north, the Grecale from the north-east and the Sirocco up from the south-east; between April and September thermal wind fills in on clear, hot afternoons.

The south-west holds Punta Trettu, a shallow sandy lagoon that stays flat in any wind and is widely rated the best flat-water spot in Italy. The north has Porto Pollo, where the Strait of Bonifacio funnels wind between Sardinia and Corsica into twin bays — one for waves, one for flat water — and which is among the windiest places in the Mediterranean. Between them, San Teodoro's La Cinta and the long shallow beach at Badesi add three and five kilometres of sand respectively.

July and August are the windiest months, with around nine days in ten usable and almost unbroken sun; May, June, September and October trade a little wind for far fewer people. The sea runs between 15 and 25°C. And Sardinia being Sardinia, the food, the coastline and the interior justify the trip on their own.
