Destination guide
Turks & Caicos, Turks and Caicos Islands
Miles of waist-deep water off Providenciales, with an onshore trade wind that blows on nine days in ten for ten months of the year.
About Turks & Caicos
Long Bay, on the south-eastern shore of Providenciales, is close to the platonic ideal of a learning beach. The water is waist-deep for miles over clean sand — at low tide you can wade out roughly a mile without losing your footing — and a shallow sandbar removes the shore break entirely.
The wind season runs November to August, with over ninety per cent of days rideable and the strongest conditions from May to August. It arrives onshore to side-onshore, which means nothing carries you out to sea, and it comes off open ocean unobstructed, so it is smooth and stable rather than gusty. There are no rocks, no current, no urchins and effectively no waves.
Air temperatures sit between 24 and 35°C and the sea between 23 and 29°C. Grace Bay and its hotels are fifteen to twenty minutes away, and the airport about the same, which makes this one of the least complicated trips in the sport.
