About Lakey Peak, Sumbawa

Lakey Peak sits on the south coast of Sumbawa, an island roughly twice the size of Bali and a fraction as developed. It has been a surfing pilgrimage for decades and the wind, when it comes, turns it into a kitesurfing one.

The season is narrow and definite: July to October. August averages 21 knots and July 23; by November the wind has gone entirely. Water stays at 28 to 29°C year-round.

This is expert water. There are three named peaks — The Peak with two to four metre waves, The Pipe breaking fast and left, and Nungas with longer, smaller waves and strong currents. The waves break fast over reef, and low tide leaves that reef dangerously close to the surface.

Amenities are minimal: basic guesthouses, small eateries, and, as one source puts it, almost nothing else to do besides kiteboarding and surfing. Which for the right rider is precisely the appeal. Bring kites from seven to eleven metres depending on your weight.
