Destination guide
Safety Bay, Australia
The Fremantle Doctor arriving at two in the afternoon, over flat water south of Perth that trains professionals.
About Safety Bay
Safety Bay sits forty-five minutes south of Perth, and the wind here has a name and a timetable. The Fremantle Doctor, the afternoon sea breeze, comes in from the south-west, south and south-east at around 20 knots and sometimes 30, from about two in the afternoon until sunset.
There are two pieces of water. The Pond, behind the sandbar, is exceptionally flat and is where the freestyle happens — it is small, and it is reserved in practice for experienced riders. The ocean side of the sandbar is sheltered with minor chop, waist-deep, and is where beginners and intermediates learn. Tide barely affects any of it.
The season runs November to February at its best, with September, October and March as shoulder months.
The combination of smooth cross-onshore wind, flat water and a reliable daily schedule has made this a recognised training base for professional riders — which is a reasonable endorsement of what it does for everyone else. It is easy to reach by public transport or car.
