About this Kite Area
Safety Bay sits forty-five minutes south of Perth, and its wind has both a name and a schedule. The Fremantle Doctor — the afternoon sea breeze — blows around 20 knots and sometimes 30 from about two in the afternoon until sunset, arriving from the south-west, south and south-east.
There are two distinct areas. The ocean side of the sandbar is sheltered and flat with minor chop, waist-deep, and is where beginners and intermediates belong. The Pond, behind the bar, is exceptionally flat and is used as a freestyle training area — space is limited there and it is in practice reserved for experienced riders.
Tide barely affects any of it, and the launch is sand. The high season runs November to February, with September, October and March as shoulder months.
Smooth cross-onshore wind, flat water and a dependable daily schedule have made this a recognised training base for professional riders, which tells you most of what you need to know.
