About Rameswaram

Rameswaram sits in the Gulf of Mannar between the Indian mainland and Sri Lanka — a Hindu pilgrimage island with a great temple at its centre and, as it turns out, an exceptional amount of wind. Sources put it at over three hundred rideable days a year.

Two seasons carry it. December to March brings northerlies averaging 15 to 20 knots; June to September brings south-westerlies at 18 to 25. Swami's Bay is the focus, with clear water, flat sections and reef waves, and nearby islands acting as natural breakwaters that take the chop out of it. Cross-shore wind and very few people.

It works at every level: flat water for those learning, reef waves for tricks and jumps.

One practical point that catches people out — kitesurfing here requires a permit. Local kite schools obtain it easily, but it is not something to arrive without.
