About this Kite Area
Swami's Bay is the hotspot for kiting on Rameswaram, in the Gulf of Mannar between the Indian mainland and Sri Lanka — around thirty kilometres from Kalpitiya across the water.
Two seasons carry it. December to March brings northerlies averaging 15 to 20 knots; June to September brings south-westerlies at 18 to 25. Between them the island records over three hundred rideable days a year.
The water is clear in peak season, with flat sections and reef waves, and nearby islands act as natural breakwaters that take much of the chop out of the bay. Wind is cross-shore. It works at every level: flat water for those learning, reef waves for tricks and jumps.
One thing to arrange before arriving — kitesurfing here requires a permit. Local kite schools obtain it easily, but you cannot simply turn up and rig.
