About Phan Rang
Phan Rang sits on Vietnam's driest stretch of coast, and My Hoa lagoon twenty kilometres out of town is the reason riders come: flat, shallow water inside a reef, and one to four metre waves outside it.
The wind is the headline. The season runs November to April, peaking December to March, with a consistent minimum of 25 knots and 30 or more common at the peak — occasionally past 40. Most people ride 5 to 7 metre kites here, and some go smaller. Combined with flat shallow water, that makes it an unusually efficient place to learn as well as a serious freestyle and wave destination.
The catch is the tide. My Hoa is heavily tide-dependent, and the water can recede beyond the reef, leaving a six to seven hundred metre walk across sharp coral. Local advice before a session is not optional here.
When the monsoon shifts from May to October, Ninh Chu Bay fifteen kilometres to the south-west takes over. Several schools operate in the area with lessons, rental and accommodation.
