About this Kite Area
My Hoa lagoon lies twenty kilometres from Phan Rang city, and it is one of the windiest reliable spots in South East Asia. The season runs November to April, peaking December to March, with a consistent minimum of 25 knots, 30 or more common at the peak and occasional days past 40. Most riders are on 5 to 7 metre kites; some go smaller.
Inside the reef the water is flat and shallow, which combined with that much wind makes it an unusually efficient place to learn. Outside the reef, waves run one to four metres for those who want them. The wind is cross to onshore during the north-east monsoon.
Tide is the thing that catches people. The lagoon is heavily tide-dependent and the water can recede beyond the reef, leaving a six to seven hundred metre walk over sharp coral. Ask locally before every session. When the monsoon shifts from May to October, Ninh Chu Bay fifteen kilometres to the south-west takes over.
