About Mui Ne

Mui Ne is a fishing town turned kite town on Vietnam's south-east coast, backed by red and white sand dunes that do something useful: they heat, and the thermal acceleration that follows regularly pushes the afternoon wind past what was forecast. Riders here routinely start on a twelve-metre kite and finish the day on a seven.

The season runs November to March, with January, February and March the peak — which has made this a fixture of the European winter. Wind runs 18 to 30 knots and gusts to 40, from the north-east through south-east, cross-onshore, filling in around ten in the morning and holding until about six.

The beaches divide the conditions. Rang Beach is flat in light wind, choppy as it builds, with shore break in the stronger gusts. Ganh Beach delivers smoother wind and well-spaced waves that suit mixed abilities, with bigger swell on windier days. Suoi Nuoc is similar but with more demanding onshore to cross-onshore wind.

The riding area is generously spaced, which keeps the crowding manageable. Jellyfish are occasionally present but not aggressive, and the shore break can exceed beginner difficulty in strong wind at high tide.
