About Diani Coast

Diani runs south from Mombasa along the Kenyan coast — a long stretch of white sand behind a barrier reef, backed by coastal forest and a line of lodges and beach houses that have been quietly excellent for decades. Its particular appeal is combinatorial: the reef in the morning, the Mara or Tsavo by light aircraft the same afternoon.

Two monsoons drive the year. Kaskazi arrives from the north-east between December and March and blows 15 to 20 knots almost daily, at its best through the early afternoon, over water at 28 to 30°C. Kusi, the south-easterly of the Kenyan winter, runs June to September at 15 to 25 knots in cooler air and pushes enough swell onto the reef to make it worth riding.

Tide is the local grammar. The range reaches four metres, and the lagoon between beach and reef is a different place at each end of it — shallow and flat at low water, deeper and chopped at high. Diani and Galu are treated as separate riding areas; Galu, to the south, is the quieter and roomier of the two.
