Destination guide
Christchurch, New Zealand
A long Pacific beach and shallow tidal flats on the edge of a South Island city, with strong sea breezes in summer.
About Christchurch
Christchurch runs out to the Pacific at New Brighton, where a long beach and a set of shallow tidal flats give the city its kitesurfing.
The most consistent wind runs October through March, and the beach works best on east to south-easterly directions — when it turns northerly, riders move to North Brighton instead. Strong sea breezes are the reliable feature here.
The tidal flats are the interesting part: shallow, forgiving water that makes this good for intermediate riders learning to hold a line, with mid to high tide giving the most usable area. When swell is running, the open beach becomes a wave spot for the more experienced.
There are local rules that matter — bird sanctuaries and ecological protection zones along this coast are marked and off limits, and the water is shared with windsurfers, paddlers and rowers. Beyond the beach, Christchurch is the gateway to the Canterbury plains and the Southern Alps.
