New Brighton Beach, Christchurch

About this Kite Area
New Brighton runs along the Pacific edge of Christchurch, and its shallow tidal flats are what make it work — forgiving water that suits intermediate riders finding their line, with mid to high tide giving the most usable area.
East to south-easterly wind is the direction here; when it shifts north, riders move up to North Brighton instead. The city's strong sea breezes are the reliable feature, and the most consistent months run October through March.
When swell is running, the open beach becomes a proper wave spot for more experienced riders.
Local rules matter on this coast. Bird sanctuaries and ecological protection zones are marked and off limits, and the water is shared with windsurfers, paddlers and rowers.
