Sanur is the old, unhurried side of Bali — a long sandy beach on the east coast, a paved promenade, and a reef holding a shallow lagoon that has quietly become Indonesia's centre for learning to kite and to wingfoil.

The season runs June to September on south-east trade winds at 15 to 20 knots. The wind is moderate rather than strong and not perfectly consistent, though it is reasonably predictable from the forecast. Water sits at 28°C year-round.

The lagoon near the Mercure and Hyatt hotels gives flat water inside the reef with a sandy bottom and few obstacles, which is why beginners do well here. Larger kites help — over thirteen metres for twin-tip riding. Sanur hosts the Bali International Kitesurfing Championship and has two established schools.

It is twenty to thirty minutes from the airport by taxi, and it is Bali: everything else on the island is a day trip away.
