Kite Area guide

Sanur, Sanur, Bali

Sanur's lagoon is where Bali teaches: flat, shallow, sandy and twenty minutes from the airport.

When to kite

Best months: June, July, August, September.

About this Kite Area

Sanur runs along Bali's east coast, a long sandy beach with a reef holding a shallow lagoon behind it. The stretch near the Mercure and Hyatt hotels gives flat water with a sandy bottom and few obstacles, which is why this has become Indonesia's principal learning and wingfoil centre.

South-east trade winds blow 15 to 20 knots from June to September. It is moderate rather than powerful wind and not perfectly consistent, though it is reasonably predictable from the forecast. Bring larger kites — over thirteen metres for twin-tip riding, smaller for foiling. Water sits at 28°C year-round.

Hazards are minimal thanks to the reef, but the beach crowds in peak season. Two established schools operate here, and the annual Bali International Kitesurfing Championship is held on this water.
