About this Kite Area
Progreso lies on the Gulf coast about an hour north of Mérida, which makes it the most accessible kitesurfing on the Yucatán peninsula. The water is flat over shallow, sloping sandbars, and the spot works for newcomers and experienced riders alike.
Wind is easterly, averaging around 11 knots with gusts reaching 25, and roughly 136 days a year exceed 12 knots. The best season runs October to May, with March, April and May among the strongest months. Air temperatures sit between 24 and 29°C.
It is a lighter-wind spot than El Cuyo up the coast, so bring bigger kites. Mérida, the colonial towns and the Maya sites inland are the reason many people base themselves here.
