About this Kite Area
El Cuyo sits on the Gulf coast of the Yucatán, a quiet fishing village where everything is within walking distance and the beach shelves so gradually that the water is still only chest-deep fifty to seventy metres out.
The prime season runs February to June, with consistent and steady 18 to 23 knot wind and water at 25 to 30°C; February to May is the ideal learning window. Wind starts light in the morning, strengthens through the afternoon and holds to sunset. The water is generally calm with small waves.
It works at every level: as forgiving a learning environment as exists in Mexico, and downwinders of sixteen to thirty-five kilometres for anyone wanting distance. December and January bring stronger El Norte storms and bigger swell, which is less suitable for beginners. Cancún is a two-hour transfer, best arranged through your accommodation rather than as an airport taxi.
