About this Kite Area
Brouwersdam separates the Grevelingen lake from the North Sea, and both sides are ridden. The lake side has almost no tidal influence: the northern end is flat, shallow and ideal for beginners and freestyle, the southern end deeper, quieter and better for foiling. The sea side is the serious half — waves at the northern end with strong currents on a spring tide, and a southern zone that is the most technical water here, with significant tidal flow.
It works on south-west to west wind at 15 to 28 knots and above. In an easterly it does not work at all: both the lake side and the sea side blow offshore.
April to June and September to October are the best months. July and August are crowded and often windless; winter brings strong wind and cold water needing a 5/4 as a minimum. Weekdays are quiet even in season.
The hazards are specific and worth memorising: underwater rocks at low tide, the sluice outlet, and offshore wind that people routinely underestimate. Local guidance is unambiguous — never kite alone on the sea side at low tide.
