About this Kite Area

Shark Bay is one of the three main flat-water zones on the Langebaan lagoon, alongside Pearly's Beach and Cape Sports Bay, and — despite the name — there are no sharks in it.

The water is shallow and flat, which combined with the shelter of the lagoon has made this one of the best places anywhere to learn kitesurfing and to build freestyle. It also works perfectly well for riders who already know what they are doing.

The season runs October to March, peaking November to February, with reliable wind at force four to seven. Air temperatures sit at 24 to 26°C, but this is the South African west coast and the water is cold — a wetsuit is advisable.

For waves, Swartriet to the north and Yzerfontein to the south are each about an hour away.
