About this Kite Area
La Ventana Bay faces the wind head on across the Sea of Cortez, with desert mountains behind it, and from mid-October to mid-April it is the busiest winter kitesurfing destination in North America.
The everyday wind is dependable rather than dramatic: north to north-westerly at 15 to 18 knots, arriving around noon and holding until five or six, with thermal effect adding five to fifteen knots to the forecast. Every few weeks a high-pressure system off California sends an El Norte down the peninsula — gusty, 20 to 35 knots. November through March are the windiest months, with October, April and May as shoulder season.
The bay is relatively deep and always slightly choppy, with small kickers forming as the wind builds; waves rarely exceed a metre or two, with occasional swell near the reef areas. It works for beginners, intermediates and advanced riders, and for freeride and foiling alike. Small rocks, coral and sea urchins are present in places along the beach — booties are recommended, particularly for learners.
