About this Kite Area
Mayapo lies about half an hour by car from Riohacha and is the most accessible riding on the Guajira peninsula. Wind averages 20 to 30 knots and strengthens through the afternoon, and a flat-water lagoon sits alongside the beach — which is what makes this a genuinely good place to learn despite the strength of the wind.
December to April is the best window, though La Guajira as a whole holds wind for ten months of the year, with only October and November falling away.
Water runs 25 to 28°C, so no wetsuit. It is also the cheapest kitesurfing in Colombia by some margin, in Wayuu country where the desert runs straight into the Caribbean.
