Cabo de la Vela sits deep in the Guajira desert, three hours by jeep from Riohacha, in a Wayuu fishing village where the Caribbean meets an almost lunar landscape.
The wind is the draw and the difficulty. It blows consistently at 25 to 35 knots and is strong year-round, but turns gusty around the middle of the day, which the sources note can be trying for beginners. This is experienced-rider territory rather than a place to take a first lesson.
October and November are the months to avoid — not for lack of wind but because the access track turns muddy and the journey becomes unreliable. Water sits at 25 to 28°C.
Punta Gallinas, the northernmost point of South America, lies four hours further on for anyone who wants to keep going.
