Kite Area guide

Praia do Preá, Jericoacoara & Preá

Preá is where the kitesurfing has moved: more space than Jericoacoara, cross to cross-onshore wind, and flat water at low tide.

When to kite

Best months: July, August, September, October, November, December, January, February.

About this Kite Area

Praia do Preá sits fourteen kilometres east of Jericoacoara and has become the primary kitesurfing area for the region — wider, emptier and easier to ride than the village beach itself.

The strip running from Barrinha to Preá gives cross to cross-onshore wind over open sand, which is why it works for every level. At low tide the water is flat; as the tide pushes in it produces kickers and rideable waves. Average wind through the season is around 17 knots with gusts well beyond, and the reliability is remarkable — 99 per cent of October days are windy, 95 to 96 per cent in August and September.

The season runs July to February, at its best from August to January. Behind the beach, the freshwater lagoons at Guriú and Tatajuba are within easy reach for flat-water days.
