Avon is where most people on Hatteras start: a shallow sound-side spit with flat water, plenty of company and no waves to negotiate.

About this Kite Area
Kite Point sits on the sound side at Avon and is the launch that made this island's reputation as a place to learn. It is a shallow sandy spit reaching into Pamlico Sound, with flat water and a bottom you can stand on for a very long way out.
North-north-west through north-east winds are the best of it; summer south-westerlies also work. There are no waves to deal with, and the crowd is famously helpful — this is a spot where strangers land each other's kites. A little under two miles south, between Avon and Buxton, Canadian Hole gives the same shallow sound water with parking, showers and a path across the highway to the ocean beach.
The one hazard worth naming is on land: power lines run along the road side, close to the launching and landing area. The sound bottom can also be shelly and stony in places, so booties are sensible.
