About this Kite Area

Kite Beach is the centre of gravity for kitesurfing in the Dominican Republic. A reef roughly three hundred metres offshore holds water that is choppier than a lagoon but flatter than open ocean — knee to waist deep in the shallows over sand — while outside it proper swell rolls in for wave riding.

The wind here has a shape to it. It builds through the middle of the day and peaks around four in the afternoon, which is why the water fills from noon to sunset. Monthly averages run 12 to 22 knots, with summer afternoons gusting 25 to 28. Winter fronts between December and March deliver the strongest and most powerful swell.

The beach accommodates every level, with beginners working the point under supervision, intermediates in the bay and advanced riders beyond the reef. The hazards are social as much as natural: afternoon crowds, beginners launching from the point, and the reef itself if you drift downwind. Booties are worth having near the reef.
