About this Kite Area
Point Chevalier sits on the central Waitematā Harbour and is Auckland's designated kitesurfing beach. The water is flat — harbour rather than ocean — which makes it suited to beginners and to freestyle rather than to waves.
Wind works best from the south-west through to the north-west, at 12 to 20 knots through the spring and summer. That is moderate by New Zealand standards, and the appeal is convenience rather than power: this is a city beach, twenty minutes from central Auckland.
For anything bigger, the west coast beaches beyond the city and Raglan two hours south are where Auckland riders go when the swell is up.
